Dear District 4 Neighbors,

As we are all reeling from the results of the national election and its implications for the future of our country, I wanted to update you on the transition of leadership here in Berkeley.

As you know our longtime Mayor Tom Bates is retiring at the end of this month. This past Tuesday, I was honored to be elected as Berkeley’s next Mayor. I will take office December 1, 2016 and the first meeting of the new City Council will be on December 13, 2016. I invite you to attend for our swearing in.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mayor Bates for his decades of leadership on behalf of our community. I come into office with big shoes to fill and I will do what I can to continue his work and to leave my own imprint on the future of our great city.

What happens next?

Because I was elected Mayor while I am in the middle of my City Council term, when I take office December 1st, the District 4 Council seat will become vacant. As a result of the vacancy, there will be a special election held between 60-90 days after the vacancy to elect a new District 4 Councilmember. I expect the election to be held sometime in late February – early March 2017.

Because our Council seat will not have a representative for several months, I wanted to reassure you that my Mayoral office will continue to serve the constituents of District 4. You are encouraged to call the Mayor’s office at 510-981-7100 with any questions or issues you need help with.
