Share why you’re getting counted in the 2020 Census by posting on Twitter with the hashtag #BerkeleyCounts, and be entered into a drawing to win gift certificates to local businesses.

The results of the 2020 Federal Census will determine how billions of dollars in federal funding get allocated for years to come. The national emergency we are now experiencing with COVID-19 is just one example of why the Census is so important. Everything from roads to public health services and disaster response funding, from our representation in government to unemployment resources is based on this count. Our ability to accurately count Berkeley residents has been challenged by the recent COVID outbreak and has limited our chances to provide Census information during a critical window of time.

We need everyone to spread the word—even if you went to stay outside of Berkeley because of COVID, if you’d normally be in Berkeley right now, go online, complete the Census and be counted in Berkeley. Posting publicly about why the Census is important to you helps raise awareness and encourages others in your network to participate.

The City of Berkeley is hosting a weekly Twitter drawing to help encourage our community to get counted. Simply post on Twitter about why the Census matters to you using the hashtag #BerkeleyCounts.

You could:

  • Tell us what federally funded programs or services you value most.

  • Write down why you’re getting counted and post a picture of yourself with the answer. We’ve made a #BerkeleyCounts template for you to use, if you like.

  • Share a screenshot of your Census confirmation page with a link to my2020census.gov

We’ll select three winners at random every week. Gift cards to local businesses, ranging in amount from $20 to $100 will be randomly selected for each winner. Winners will be contacted via private message on Twitter, then announced in a Tweet. Please limit entries to one per person.
