Join Us at Monday’s MLK Jr Virtual Celebration

This Monday marks the 11th annual Martin Luther King Jr Celebration. You can RSVP here. The event is free to join, but donations are encouraged. Proceeds will be given to the organizations being recognized at the event (details below).

2022 Community Action Awards

Six individuals/organizations are being recognized at this event, who embody this year’s theme of Health Equity & Justice.

LifeLong Medical Care Street Medicine Teams

LifeLong Medical has worked closely with unhoused populations during the pandemic, providing vaccinations to those who may not have the resources or access to getting one. Their efforts at providing health and pandemic related assistance has helped prevent major outbreaks among the unhoused community.

Youth Spirit Artworks

Last year, YSA opened their Tiny House Village, serving transitional age youth (18-25) in Berkeley and Oakland. This program provides shelter and services to individuals who otherwise would be living on the streets.

Ari Neulight, UC Berkeley Homeless Outreach Coordinator

Ari Neulight has played a critical role in providing assistance and services to the unhoused community in People’s Park and the Southside neighborhood. These services have been even more critical during the pandemic, and he has effectively used his experience and compassion to lift people out of poverty.

The Way Christian Center

The Way is committed to serving vulnerable members of the community, providing support to our unhoused neighbors with food, clothes, hygiene kits, and clean-up and trash management support.

Berkeley Public Schools Fund

During a time of virtual learning, the Berkeley Public Schools Fund has provided $450k in direct support to families, including through essential learning supplies, housing, and digital infrastructure assistance.

Dr. Lisa Hernandez, Berkeley Public Health Officer

As the head of Berkeley’s Public Health Department, Dr. Hernandez has played a key role in the pandemic at protecting Berkeley residents. Through her leadership, Berkeley has an over 90% vaccination rate, and has worked closely with the City Manager’s Office and Mayor’s Office in providing frequent and transparent communications to the community.
